Breakfast in Madrid can be as traditional as toasted country bread drizzled with olive oil or as decadent as an eggs Benedict and two-mimosa brunch! For great breakfast and brunch options, the Malasaña neighborhood has it all. Sip your café con leche at an outdoor café, dunk churros dipped in thick hot chocolate at a family-run churrería or tuck into poached eggs on avocado toast at a neighborhood hotspot.

1. Churrería Madrid 1883

When to Go: Between 9am and 12 pm for breakfast or a mid-morning pick-me-up

Vibe: Traditional neighborhood spot

Churrería Madrid 1883 is the oldest churro shop in the Malasaña neighborhood and is run by third and fourth-generation churros makers. The churros are hot and crispy and perfect for dunking in their extra rich, but not too sweet hot chocolate. Try the classic thin churros, or go for the thick and fluffy Madrid-style porras. If you’re not ready for chocolate in the morning, try your churros with a café con leche (espresso with steamed milk).

2. Carmencita

Vibe: Busy modern brunch

Carmencita is the gold standard for eggs Benedict and mimosas in Madrid. This popular Malasaña brunch is served at their three neighborhood locations. For weekend brunch, be sure to make a reservation through their website as tables fill up fast! All the staff speak English and are happy to help you choose between smoked salmon, bacon or avocado Benedicts (or all three). They also have gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options. The homemade cakes are extra delicious, so save room for dessert!

3. Café Comercial

Vibe: Traditional Spanish elegance

Café Comercial has been serving coffee to Madrileños since 1887. It’s one of the oldest cafés in the city and was recently given a glamorous facelift. Sit inside on low lounge chairs or grab a table outside. Enjoy traditional Spanish breakfast options like tostada con tomate, toasted baguette served with fresh tomato pureé and olive oil, local pastries and a great sandwich mixto, a grilled ham and cheese sandwich.

4. Pepe Botella

When to Go: Leisurely breakfast or late morning coffee break

Vibe: Cozy café 

Pepe Botella, named after Napoleon’s brother who briefly reigned as the king of Spain, is a local favorite in the Dos De Mayo square. It has a cozy café vibe with strong coffee and simple tostadas with fresh tomato pureé and olive oil or butter and jam.  There’s also great outdoor seating, perfect for sipping your coffee while watching the neighborhood come to life.

5. Toma Café

Vibe: Specialty coffee hipster

Since 2011, Toma Café has been at the forefront of specialty coffee in Madrid. They serve small-batch, locally roasted coffee and make killer baked goods. Order your coffee from English-speaking baristas, then grab a table by the large, street-facing windows. There are excellent toasts with seasonal ingredients and a bit of flair. You can also get a perfect cold brew or flat white to go.

6. Ojalá

What to Order: Build your own toast with tomato and Iberian ham 

When to Go: Everyday breakfast and brunch

Vibe: Boho brunch

Grab your sunglasses and head to Ojalá for fresh-squeezed juice, great coffee and delicious food! Ojalá is located in a beautiful plaza with indoor and outdoor seating. Choose from a variety of artisanal breads and carefully prepared toppings for the perfect toast set-up. They also have several multi-plate savory and sweet brunch options. Keep in mind that there’s a 5% surcharge for outdoor service.

7. La Tape

What to Order: Croissant mixto (grilled ham and cheese on a croissant) or a classic mollete con tomate

When to Go: Breakfast or mid-morning snack

Vibe: Neighborhood café

On the corner of bustling Calle de Manuela Malsaña and Calle de San Berndardo, La Tape is a neighborhood favorite. Madrid’s former mayor has been spotted having coffee alongside local regulars. The breakfast and brunch menu offers Spanish classics with modern add-ons. Top your mollete (Spanish breakfast roll) with fresh tomato, avocado slices or even scrambled eggs. Or go for a croissant mixto, grilled ham and cheese on a buttery croissant. If you have a sweet tooth, there are yummy cakes as well!

8. Bodega de la Ardosa

Vibe: Traditional Spanish 

A pincho de tortilla or a thick slice of Spanish egg and potato omelet is one of the great pleasures of Spanish life. For the perfect slice and a slice of Madrid history, visit Bodega de la Ardosa. Opened in 1892, this neighborhood classic is lined with wine bottles and bar memorabilia. Just remember, if you need to use the restroom, you have to duck under the bar to get there!
